Tech-savvy folk know the benefits of sourcing news and information online. It can be updated as and when stories break or change and there is just more space to fill with information and other useful stuff. Just think of a newspaper; you buy it in the morning to read the latest current events, but what about stories which break at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m.…? You get the picture.

Online sports betting is no different. Up-to-the-minute odds are one benefit, and a good one at that and up to the minute news is another one! If you’re placing a bet on motorsports, you would want to know the latest behind the scenes news on trial laps, engine trouble and more before you back a winner. The same goes for horse racing; if you’re placing a bet at the last minute, make sure you’re equipped with the latest facts, injuries to horse and rider and other incidents.

It applies to all sports, which is why odds change right up until the actual event, whether it’s a race, bout or match. The Bookies determine the odds based on the information available to them at the time and as this changes, so do the odds. If you’re betting online, you’ll access all this information as it happens, leading to a more informed stake.

The 2010 soccer World Cup in South Africa saw betting take on a whole new aspect – with match winners being predicted by none other than an octopus. Choosing a cephalopod mollusc to predict a sporting event was simply unheard of until then. However, despite the success of the ‘psychic octopus’, including predicting Spain as the overall winner, sea creatures are not set to become a regular vehicle for setting odds. But, if it does, you’ll surely here about it first online.

Today’s consumers are savvier than ever. They know how to find good deals and they know when they’re being taken advantage of. One of the best things that you can do to save money in the current economy is to find coupons that offer discounted prices on products like computers, printers, televisions, and monitors. Acquiring useful coupons will help you enjoy a high-tech lifestyle without spending a ton of cash on consumer goods.

Finding Coupons Online

The Internet is one of the best places to look for useful coupons. Most companies have websites where they offer exclusive deals, coupon codes, and coupons that consumers can print at home. For instance, if you are looking for Dell coupons, then you can find several of them on the Dell website. It’s a fast, easy way to save a lot of money on high-tech products.

You don’t have to rely on companies like Dell, however, to give you coupons on their websites. There are also plenty of third-party companies that offer consumers a variety of coupons. Finding reliable coupon websites can help you save big on everything from high-ticket items, such as new computers, to everyday products, such as groceries.

Using Third-Party Coupons

Third-party coupons are useful because they offer special deals that you cannot get anywhere else. Websites that offer these coupons often get paid by the companies that they advertise for. For instance, a website that offers Dell coupons gets paid by Dell whenever someone purchases computers and related products with the coupon. It’s called affiliate marketing, and it can earn website owners a lot of money.

In order to make money, though, they have to offer good deals. Spend some time searching for coupons that will help you save the most money. It might take a little bit of time, but it really pays off.

Freeware and ELUAs: How to Protect Yourself

End license user agreements, or EULA as many call them, are those boxes that pop up when you install software. They typically offer two choices at the bottom of several pages of legalese, “I Agree to These Terms” or “I Do Not Agree to These Terms.” In general, people tend to simply click Agree, without reading, simply to begin the installation of their software. Every iTunes update comes with one of these, so they are not just a product of software the user purchases in a store or through a web site.

Unfortunately for the unwitting consumer, software companies are using the complacence and apathy of the public as a means to get the user to agree to software he may not have bargained for. There are numerous cases of this, yet since the end license user agreement was legally signed with that click, there is little to no legal recourse for those who may find unwanted programs at best – and malicious spyware at worst – on their computers. One of the more famous cases of this problem was when Apple snuck their Safari IOS into an iTunes update. Legally they were in the clear since everyone did agree to the installation, but acts like this only undermine the consumers’ trust in the company.

The situation with Apple is not the typical way EULA abuse makes the headlines. Typically people who download software find themselves on the receiving end of malware, Trojan horses, and bots that corrupt their systems and crash their hard drives. Unfortunately for these folks, the law says they brought it on themselves.

Despite the fact that End license user agreements tend to be long and obtusely worded, the public needs to read and understand what they are agreeing to when they accept free software from an unknown source.

E-cigarettes Have Arrived

Until a few years ago no one had ever heard of an e-cigarette. Now you can buy them at stores, malls and on the Internet in an increasing number of brands and styles.

An e-cigarette is a battery operated device that looks like a cigarette but instead of tobacco uses a liquid containing nicotine that is changed into a vapor and inhaled by the user. There is no smoke or combustion, so problems such as such as ashes or clothing odor, and second hand smoke and fire hazard are eliminated.

The device works by heating the liquid to create a vapor that can be inhaled just like regular cigarette smoke. The e-cig consists of a mouthpiece, a cartridge of nicotine, an atomizer, a small computer chip, an airflow sensor and a lithium battery—all designed to look like a cigarette. The cartridge contains a wick soaked with a mix of nicotine, water, flavoring and glycerin. Cartridges come in different flavors and strengths, from strong all the way down to none. To use the e-cig, you draw on the cartridge end (which causes the LED in the other end to glow red) and inhale the resultant vapor.

Invented by Dr. Sam Han in China in 2004 under the name Ruyan (which means “almost like smoke”) Dr. Han was looking for a way to stop his 3-5 pack a day habit. With e-cigarettes, Dr. Han was finally able to stop smoking and he decided to share his invention with the world. Now advertised as an “alternative to tobacco,” e-cigarettes are spreading quickly. Europe has already declared e-cigarettes legal in restaurants and government buildings where tobacco cigarettes are outlawed.

While there are still issues around nicotine addiction, e-cigarettes provide a safer way to smoke for everybody concerned and has removed the threat of lung cancer from smoking.

Buying a Municipal Bond Online

Before getting into buying municipal bonds online and how that works, it’s good to review what a bond is. A bond is a debt security, with a formal contract, where an authorized issuer borrows money from a holder and takes on a debt that is agreed to be paid back in a fixed amount of time with interest added. When a bond is issued, the issuer is essentially promising a return on an initial investment (the face value of the loan).

One type of bond to invest in is a municipal bond (also known as a muni). Municipal bonds are great because they are considered liquid investments meaning that they are able to be sold at anytime, similar to stocks. The selling price of the “muni” is determined depending on the market at that particular time. Just like in the stock market, it could be up or it could be down on any given day.

Municipal bonds are considered a good vehicle that you can invest your money into. They don’t pose very much of a risk as far as investments go, and they have a great benefit of having their returns be free from federal tax.

Important concepts you need to take into consideration when buying a bond online are the following: Make sure to fully understand any agreement that you are about to enter into in purchasing a bond. Take time to know what is required on your part as well as know how and when you should expect to get your investment and return on your investment back.

An easy way to purchase bonds is through an online broker or dealer. Opening an account with one is easy, and it is also less expensive to buy a bond online from a website rather than from retail brokers—which means more money in your pocket (which is always a good thing)!

Download Faster When Using Windows Vista

Sometimes when using Windows Vista, you may encounter download delays and a sluggish computer. There are many reasons why this can be happening but a few helpful hints may get you back on the road to faster downloads.

First make sure you are connected to the Internet with optimum speed. You can do this by right clicking the icon that is found in the lower right corner of your monitor that displays “Local Area Connection.” Make sure it is enabled and if the status reads that you have limited connectivity you can enter your control panel and click on “Network and Sharing Center,” and then “Manage Network Connections.” Select “Status” and in the dialog box that appears, click “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then select “Properties.” Make sure that the options for “Obtain an IPv6 automatically” and “Obtain DNS server automatically” are selected, and then click “Ok.”

If this does not speed up your download time do a reboot of your modem by turning off your computer, unplugging the router (if one is connected) and then resetting the modem. Some have a reset button in the back. You can find this information out by calling the company you use. Once you have done this simply wait for the lights to come on with your modem then plug in the router. Once that boots up turn your computer back on. This will also be helpful to refresh your computer settings.

If this does not work and you know that there are no outages in your area you may want to close unnecessary programs that are running in the background by opening the “Task Manager” and ending those programs that you are not actively using. You can also run a speed test of your Internet connection at many free sites to see exactly how fast you are downloading. If you have done all of this and are still running slow you may want to call your provider and see if there are any other issues that are affecting your computer.

Disk Cleanup
Image via Wikipedia

Cleaning up your computer can make it run more efficiently and prolong the life of your system. There are a few simple ways that you can do this at no cost and it only takes a few minutes of your time.

Cleaning out programs that you no longer need or use can drastically help your computer run faster. Simply open the “add or remove programs” utility by clicking your control panel. Once the programs load, you can search by name, date, etc. and choose the ones that you no longer have use for. Some of these programs are pre-installed with your computer and may be programs you have never needed. Simply highlight the program and click the uninstall button. If you are not sure if a program is needed simply do an online search to see if it is a useful program that you need or if it can be removed.

A disk cleanup can remove unnecessary files and clean out the clutter in your computer. This option is found by clicking your start button to show the programs you have, then accessories. Disk cleanup is found in the accessories file and once you pull it up just click your C drive or any other drives you want to clean. The C drive is the one that will typically be the most cluttered. This only takes moments to do and can help your computer run faster. In fact, you should do it on a regular basis or have it scheduled to perform automatically.

A defragment takes longer but helps clean out files and junk that can’t be simply tossed away. These are files that are no longer in use but still remain on your system. Files get stored in the order they are used and this is where a defragment comes in handy. It rearranges the files so that they are in the correct place, making your computer run faster. This can be also found in the accessories file after you click the start button and then view your program files.

Search Engine Optimization, known as SEO, can help your website or blog get noticed and become more friendly for search engines to locate.

When building your site or blog be sure to choose the correct keywords to optimize your material. Be sure they are specific to your site. These are best utilized in the body tag of each page you are building. You can find many Search Engine Optimization sites that will let you discover which keywords are best for your site and most of them allow you to do this for free. When putting text on your pages be sure that you use dense keywords but also that they are appropriate for your site. Try to think of how others might be able to find your site and use those specific keywords. A helpful hint is to think of the last search you did and what type of words you used to complete that search. Now apply theory to your own site.

Meta tags are useful in helping search engine robots index your site. These are typically the first lines of your page. Put in a description and use keywords. Sites that you use for Search Engine Optimization can also create meta tags that you can use. Usually you will start with your description and keywords and the site will create a meta tag that you can apply to your site’s HTML.

Another helpful Search Engine Optimization type is robots.txt, which is a file that the robots will use to follow your site and decide which files or pages to index. You can create these by visiting various Search Engine Optimization sites or use something such as Google Pages, which has a section created just for websites.

Most websites will become lost or overlooked if they do not apply Search Engine Optimization techniques.

If you need to find out where something is but can’t afford a GPS unit or it’s simply not practical at this time you may have an alternative – Google Maps.

With Google Maps you can install it on a smart phone and use it like a GPS unit to find addresses, local businesses and even businesses in the area such as restaurants and stores because it allows you to perform a generic search. So if you are searching for a Mexican restaurant you simply type it in and it will search for you using the technology that your smart phone comes equipped with.

Once the free application is downloaded the user can now see their own location on a map, search for business listings, get turn-by-turn driving directions, street views, latitude, traffic reports, transit directions, biking directions and layers. It does most everything a GPS unit does but at no cost to the person using it.

Right now Google Maps supports many smart phones such as the Android, Blackberry, iPhone and others as well as Windows. Another nifty feature is that it has voice search so you can perform searches hands-free. Different phones support different functions with Google Maps so you do have to research to see which functions are available with your individual smart phone. However, with a quick visit to their website you can be on your way to easier navigation without having to pay an arm and a leg for a GPS unit.

Iphone GPS
Even if you already own a GPS unit it’s not a bad idea to have a back up plan so you’re never without a way of finding an address you are looking for. Plus, with the Google Maps application being a free download you have nothing to lose in trying out its features and abilities.

Reducing Hard Disk Thrashing on Your Computer

Image via Wikipedia

Computer thrashing is an issue that some may face when the excessive interchanging of pages of data between memory and the hard disk cause the computer to make excessive noise and the light to constantly blink. Simply put, it means that you are trying to do more tasks than your computer has physical memory to perform.

One of the ways to reduce thrashing is to add more memory to your computer so it has more room to perform tasks. Simply find out the make and model of your computer and order memory online or visit a brick and mortar store. You will want to get the most memory that will fit in your specific system. If your computer will take 4gb of memory, purchase that size. You never want to get a smaller size just to save money.

Running programs from a CD-Rom instead of installing the program to your hard drive can free up space as well.

If you are running Vista on your computer, a program that uses excessive memory and can cause thrashing, you can turn off and disable Windows Vista Search Indexer and Indexing Service. This can be done through your control panel by selecting the start button and locating the Windows Search service. All this will do is make it harder to find files on your system but if you know where you put things then it’s not an issue. Plus, this service can be turned back on at a moment’s notice if needed. This should cut down on some of the noise and lag you are experiencing.

You can always add another hard drive to your computer that can be used for temporary files and virtual memory.

Not only will these tips help reduce thrashing, they will also prolong the life of your hard drive.
